Trompe l'Oeil Tray By Richard Froment, Sarreguemines (late 19th Century)
Artist: Froment Richard
Called "Plateau quatre assiettes papier" (Four Paper Plate Tray) in the Sarreguemines pottery catalogs, this trompe l'oeil piece bears the form number 2176. It serves as a support for designs by the illustrator Froment Richard. These trays have two holes on the back, allowing for use as wall decoration. The basin of each plate is illustrated with a trade: the glazier, the cooper, the tinsmith, and the gardener. On the third plate, "To the Victors of the Bastille," held by our tinsmith, the artist's initials, F.R., are visible on the seal placed on the ground. The rim of the plates is decorated with a floral pattern, the "Roses and Daisies" design. The vignettes and floral pattern were applied to the earthenware using a transfer printing technique.
