"Pharmacy Rack – Montpellier Manufacture, 18th Century"
An important white earthenware pharmacy jar with cobalt blue decoration, attributed to the Montpellier manufactory and dating from the 18th century. The ovoid body rests on a flared circular foot. It has a volute-shaped side handle and an opposing tubular spout, typical of jars intended for liquid pharmaceutical preparations. The hand-painted decoration consists of leafy scrolls and stylized flowers in shades of blue, framing a central inscription "S. Derham," indicating the medicinal contents it contained. The intentionally irregular calligraphy testifies to the craftsmanship characteristic of 18th-century southern French production. The glaze displays a beautiful antique patina, with some slight imperfections, minor firing flaws, and wear consistent with age and use. Some minor chips and losses are visible, particularly around the spout and foot, but these do not detract from the legibility or decorative quality of the piece. An emblematic object in the history of pharmacy, this small jug illustrates the expertise of the workshops of Montpellier, a major center for the production of pharmaceutical earthenware under the Ancien Régime. It is a choice piece for a collection of antique earthenware, a cabinet of curiosities, or a distinctive decorative display.
