This work is most likely a design for a ceiling that was never executed or that has since been lost. From left to right: Painting, Music, Poetry, Architecture, Sculpture. Stencil mark on the reverse: Vallé et Bourniche, Rue de l'Arbre Sec N°3, Paris. This mark was used between 1825 and 1841. Vauchelet regularly purchased his canvas from this merchant; his mark appears on several of his works. His studio was located nearby, at 2 rue Monsieur le Prince.
