Schaeffer Antique Painting Wild Boar Herd Forest Landscape 1938 Rötig Style
Beautiful oil on canvas depicting a herd of wild boar progressing through an autumnal undergrowth, in a cold, golden-brown edge light. The composition is clearly in the taste of the great forest animal scenes: rocky terrain, ferns, slender trunks, vaporous depth and silent passage of the beasts in a dense, inhabited nature.
The painter develops here a vocabulary very close to the animal painting of hunting tradition, where the animal is not isolated as a simple motif, but melted into the atmosphere of the landscape. The wild boars emerge from a humid forest backdrop, treated with brown tones, bluish grays, muted greens and copper highlights, which aptly convey the grave poetry of an autumn evening.
The whole work evokes the spirit of Georges-Frédéric Rötig, with its emphasis on the herd, the collective movement of the beasts, the edge, the undergrowth and this deeply forested vision of the scene. This is not a work by Rötig, but a painting in his taste.
