Antique Butterfield-type sundial. Engraved and signed brass model by Claude Langlois in Paris. Dove motif gnomon. Mid-18th century work, presented in its original shagreen case. Very good condition.
Claude Langlois (1703-1756), Engineer to the King for mathematics, after having his workshops on the Quai de l'Horloge until 1735, then moved to the Galeries (of the Louvre). It is said of him: "The best builder of the period was undoubtedly Claude Langlois, regular supplier to the astronomers of the Observatory. It was Langlois who built all the octants and quadrants for the expeditions of La Condamine, Maupertuis, the Abbé de La Caille, etc. In 1743, he traced the meridian line of Saint-Sulpice and was the first engineer of mathematical instruments at the Academy."
