Dubuc The Elder In Paris: Gilt Bronze Portico Clock, First Empire
Artist: Dubuc L'ainé
A large gilt bronze Empire period clock, circa 1810, the work of the renowned Parisian clockmaker Dubuc l'Aîné, known for his clocks since the reign of Louis XVI. Presented in a classic portico reminiscent of a Greek temple, this clock boasts highly inspired decoration. On the front of the clock face are two fantastical winged horses with fish tails; on the base are two griffins; on the sides are musical angels; at the base of the fluted pilasters are faces surrounded by suns. Below the enamel dial (with a small chip), surrounded by a Greek frieze, are two winged women sounding trumpets amidst perfectly chiseled drapery, palmettes, and volutes. The pendulum was not overlooked by the sculptor; two marine chimeras surmount a shell in which an angel and his dog rest. This clock is complete and in working order, but should be serviced to ensure its accuracy. A truly beautiful piece.
