The stand features a distinctive and detailed bronze bas-relief of the head of Medusa, one of the three Gorgons of Greek mythology. Her hair is depicted as snakes, and her head features wings on the sides.
The structure, which features a classic design with a raised base and a wide rim, is made of nickel silver, an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel.
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples 1852 - Naples 1929) was an Italian designer, sculptor, and goldsmith. He was self-taught, drawing inspiration from the alleys of Naples' historic center and from the sculptures in the Archaeological Museum. He had an intense and prolific artistic career that led to success at the Paris Salons in the second half of the 19th century, but was ultimately extinguished by an intellectual crisis that forced him into retirement for eighteen years. His production stood out because it transcended the fashions of the time, his works are characterized by a strong realism and expressiveness.
