View of Beynac
Watercolor on rough paper
H. 28.5 cm; W. 18.5 cm.
This watercolor depicts the village of Beynac perched on its cliff, majestically overlooking the Dordogne Valley. At the summit, the medieval castle stands with its high ochre walls and massive tower, a symbol of power and history. Stone buildings with dark roofs cascade down the rock face, following the steep contours of the land. Below, the river meanders calmly, reflecting the clear sky and the verdant hues of the riverside vegetation. The trees, rendered with soft, diffused brushstrokes, frame the scene and enhance the depth of the landscape. The gentle palette of beiges, greens, and muted blues creates a peaceful and luminous atmosphere, typical of a landscape watercolor where time seems suspended.
