A beautiful patina of use adorns this exceptional "mosquito mask," which refers to the mythical male spirit known as "Parak" or "Brag." The Parak spirit is associated with initiation ceremonies and hunting. The region of origin for this type of mask is in the Mambe lands, but this typical form has nevertheless been found all along the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, from the mouth of the Sepik River westward to the eastern regions of Kairiru Island.
