A woven wicker mask, known as a "gable mask," is commonly hung above the gable end of one of the two entrances or near one of the openings or "windows" of the men's house. These masks are meant to protect the tribe from illness, misfortune, and other misfortunes. They symbolize the protective woman, the mother, and the head of the communal house. This mask was collected in the Blackwater area in Papua New Guinea. It is made of woven willow, wood, and natural pigments. Stand on request only.
