Rare Asian Lacquered Wooden Chest, Dating From The First Half Of The 20th Century

A rare Asian lacquered wooden chest, dating from the first half of the 20th century, of Chinese or Japanese origin, crafted in the tradition of storage and travel chests. The chest has a rectangular structure resting on four legs, entirely finished in a deep black lacquer that contrasts with large cinnabar-red lacquered panels. These panels are adorned with finely painted figurative scenes depicting figures in traditional dress within a stylized landscape, typical of Far Eastern iconography. The entire piece is richly reinforced with gilt brass fittings, hinges, corners, and reinforcing bands, studded and chased, giving the chest both a functional role and a strong decorative presence. The flat, hinged lid retains its original central locking mechanism.
