André Auclair Ceramic Vase, 20th Century
Artist: André Auclair
A ceramic vase created by André Auclair (1893–1976), a French artist trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early career, marked by painting, engraving, and tapestry, led him to explore ceramics in the early 1950s, a period during which he developed a body of work producing vases and sculptural pieces.
Settling in the Ardèche region in the 1950s, André Auclair established a workshop there and pursued an artistic exploration in which ceramics became a true medium of artistic expression. This vase presents a free and expressive form, blurring the lines between utilitarian object and sculpture. The decoration evokes the seabed, suggested by the reliefs, the textural effects, and the nuances of the glaze with its mineral tones.
