Pauli VUORISALO (1944-2016). Mixed media on canvas, monogrammed lower right and dated 1971. Signed on the reverse. Dimensions: 84.5 x 84.5 cm. Pauli Vuorisalo, born in Kankaanpää on April 16, 1944, was a precocious artist. At the age of 16, he made his first appearance in a group exhibition in Pori, and at 20, he founded the Kankaanpää School of Art. Vuorisalo was known as a versatile visual artist who employed a variety of techniques throughout his career. He believed that every thought and event found its own natural form. Vuorisalo produced drawings, graphics, gouaches, ceramics, glasswork, and textile art. He also wrote poetry. Vuorisalo, from Satakunta, was interested in the Finnish design industry. In the mid-1980s, he was a visiting artist in Saudi Arabia, creating a collection of fabric designs for Marimekko and, a little later, a series of glass vases for Iittala. Vuorisalo considered himself a representative of what is known as the Parisian school. He studied in France from 1969 to 1974. Vuorisalo said he escaped the narrow-mindedness of the Finnish art world by going to Paris. The artist loved the theater and was often seen at social events sharing his stories. His last exhibition was held at Kulttuurikeskus Sofia in Helsinki in 2012. Vuorisalo died of cancer at the age of 73 at Haartman Hospital in Helsinki on December 21. The disease was diagnosed just one week before his death.
