Bronze Group Of Deer By Clovis Edmond Masson (1838-1913)
Artist: Clovis Edmond Masson
Clovis Edmond Masson, born March 7, 1838, and died September 10, 1913, in Villevaudé, was a renowned 19th-century French animal sculptor. A student of Antoine-Louis Barye, he specialized in depicting animals in bronze, capturing their dynamism and expressiveness with great precision. This sculpture represents a family of deer, including a rutting stag, a typical scene of the wilderness. The dimensions of the work (Height: 40 cm, Width: 38 cm, Depth: 17.5 cm) indicate it was designed as a decorative object for the home. The depiction of the rutting stag suggests a moment of tension and power, while the presence of the family adds a dimension of tenderness and protection. The city of Nîmes houses several of the artist's sculptures in its museum. His son, Jules-Edmond Masson, also became a sculptor.
