Pablo Picasso - Autographed Letter Signed

Artist: Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Spanish painter.
Autograph letter signed to Eugenia Errazuriz. Barcelona, June 22, 1917; 2 pages, octavo. Letter written in Spanish.
Rare letter from Pablo Picasso during the First World War. Taking refuge at his home in Barcelona, he received Serge Diaghilev in connection with his collaboration on the legendary Ballets Russes. It was at Eugenia Errazuriz's initiative that Picasso was introduced to Serge Diaghilev, who commissioned him to design sets for his ballets. While working on the ballet in Rome, the Spanish artist fell in love with the dancer Olga Khokhlova. They married in 1918. From their union was born the painter's first son, Paulo:
"Dear Eugenia, What joy you gave me with your card from Barcelona." I returned to Madrid and went to eat with Diaghilev at the home of V. Folita's friend, who is very charming and quite beautiful, and I already long to return to Paris. If it weren't for the war, perhaps I would have stayed here all summer. I'll need the thousand francs now for some things to pay for on the first of the month in Paris. If you like, Ernestine, to whom I will write, will come to your house, and you can give them to her, thus saving me the trouble of sending them from here. Write to me and tell me about things, and don't tell me you're sad, when everyone loves you, and I do too. Your friend, Picasso. Eugenia Errázuriz (1860-1951) was born in Bolivia. Her father was a very wealthy businessman who made his fortune in silver mines. The family took refuge in Chile, driven out by the civil war. She married José Tomás Errázuriz, a diplomat, at the age of twenty. Overwhelmed by boredom, she convinced her husband to move to Paris. Her wealth, her beauty, and her talent for capturing the spirit of the times brought her into contact with all the artistic and intellectual talents of her era. Among other things, she financed Sergei Diaghilev's experiments for the Ballets Russes. She introduced him to Matisse, De Chirico, Miró, and then Picasso, to paint the sets. It was Cocteau who introduced his friend Picasso to Eugenia in 1916. She was 56, he was twenty years younger. Strong bonds developed with the Spanish painter, a thirty-year friendship during which he painted her no fewer than twenty-four times.
