A French painter originally from the Russian Empire, Alice Dannenberg attended Elise von Jung-Stilling's drawing and painting school in Riga before moving to Karlsruhe in 1886 to study under Edmund Kanoldt at the Grand Duchy's School for Women. In 1887, she enrolled at the Bern School of Fine Arts, where she met her future Bernese partner, Martha Stettler. In 1891, she entered the Geneva School of Fine Arts and the following year left with Martha Stettler for Paris, where she studied under Lucien Simon, René Ménard, and Jacques-Émile Blanche. The work is signed in the lower right corner.
