Jeanne De Soomer Schaerbeek (Belgium), 1925 - Born to Flemish parents from a modest background, she was self-taught in everything, which allowed her to pursue a wide variety of activities. On an artistic level, she was interested, in turn, in sculpture, modeling and music, but it was painting that allowed her to express herself most naturally. She painted very diverse subjects in oil, animated by a host of characters, and readily drew her inspiration from the folklore and history of Belgium. In a desire for narrative clarity and readability of the scene, she ordered her space by rejecting all notions of depth, proportion and perspective. She does not hesitate to fold down the planes, divide her canvas into registers and even to introduce short explanatory texts. Numerous exhibitions. She has exhibited regularly since 1976 at the Galerie Dierickx in Brussels, at the Maison des Arts Spontanes et Naïfs in Brussels in 1979, etc. Bibliography: Brussels seen by the Naïve painters.
