Viardot Carved Wooden Pedestal Table With Bronze Ornaments
Artist: Viardot
An elegant pedestal table resting on four gracefully curved legs, finely carved from a dense, warm, deep brown exotic wood. The apron features openwork ornamentation inspired by traditional geometric patterns, embellished with chiseled bronze medallions depicting Chinese lion masks (shishi), symbols of protection and strength. The slender base terminates in stylized claw feet, providing stability and presence. In the center, a circular, openwork stretcher, also adorned with a bronze medallion, reinforces the structure while offering remarkable visual balance. The top is made of royal red marble. This type of pedestal table was intended to hold a precious vase, pottery, or jade work. The quality of the sculpture, the richness of detail, and the use of bronze attest to meticulous craftsmanship. Attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904). Dimensions: Height 93 cm, Width 44 cm, Diameter of marble base 25 cm. Marble is cracked and has some pitting on the feet.
