Domenico Piola, “Holy Family,” oil on canvas, 17th century
Domenico Piola, Holy Family
Oil on canvas, 40 × 50 cm
Carved and gilded wooden frame
The work depicts a delicate and intimate scene of the Holy Family, typical of the Genoese Baroque sensibility of which Domenico Piola was one of the greatest interpreters.
At the center of the composition is the Virgin Mary, captured in a maternal gesture as she gazes tenderly at the Baby Jesus, reclining on a soft white cloth. The warm light, concentrated on the main figures, enhances their faces and creates a strong contrast with the shadier background, drawing the viewer's gaze to the emotional core of the scene.
Next to the Madonna are angelic figures with a contemplative and devout expression, while in the background we glimpse the watchful presence of St. Joseph, barely illuminated by a soft chiaroscuro.
The canvas is in good condition and aesthetic state.
The work is enhanced by a rich and scenographic carved and gilded frame, in Baroque style, which enhances its preciousness and chromatic depth.
