"Satin-topped Secretary Chest Stamped P.mantel, Transition Period, 18th Century"
A rare commode-secretary in satinwood veneer and light wood stringing, with attractive gilt bronze ornamentation. The key and lock are functional. It rests on two cabriole front legs and has a molded griotte marble top. The canted front opens with two wide drawers and a drop-front that unfolds in two sections to reveal three small drawers and compartments. In very good overall condition, the drop-front has been later re-covered. Stamped P. MANTEL and JME on the upper upright. This piece perfectly illustrates the "English style" that would influence the decorative arts in the second half of the 18th century. Pierre MANTEL (?-1802) was appointed master cabinetmaker on October 1, 1766. He worked on rue de Charenton and then rue Saint-Antoine in Paris. He specialized in the manufacture of secretaries in all their forms, a piece of furniture that was then new and very fashionable. His work is quite rare and always very finely crafted. A piece from the Louis XV/Louis XVI transition period, second half of the 18th century.
