********************

Small pewter pitcher with shoulder, tasseled lid, five-spoke palmette thumb mark, and plinth foot.
The gauging mark with a fleur-de-lis has already been recorded, along with the 1762 inspection report.
Height: 14.8 cm.
ROUEN, Second half of the 18th century.

This small gauging pitcher is the only one of its kind in Rouen production to feature this type of thumb mark.
Rare and in very good condition.
Bibliography: "Les étains normands" by Jean-Claude Commenchal.

It is worth noting that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., was supposed to be periodically checked by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure the consumer received a "correct measure," but in reality, this regulation was rarely enforced, and pitchers bearing gauging marks are indeed rare.
