Jean-Édouard Lacretelle was a painter, draftsman, lithographer, and engraver. He worked in oil, watercolor, and pastel. Lacretelle mainly produced portraits, genre paintings, and equestrian scenes. In 1841, he made his debut with a portrait at the Paris Salon, where he would exhibit intermittently until 1889. In 1843, he painted a portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) for the Château de Versailles and the Trianon palaces, commissioned by King Louis-Philippe. In 1851, Lacretelle left for London and presented his works at the Royal Academy, where he would exhibit until 1891. He became one of the portraitists of the English high society.
Jean-Edouard Lacretelle, born June 4, 1817, in Forbach, he died on May 3, 1900, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
