Artist: 江州住 包信 Goshu-ju Kanenobu
Superb, authentic antique Tsuba (Japanese sword guard)from the Edo period (1750–1850), crafted from carvedwrought iron (*Tetsu*). Signed 江州住 包信 Goshu-ju Kanenobu – Mountain motif.
This piece is distinguished by itscomplete and perfectly legible engraved signature on either side of the *Nakago-ana*(central opening):
Right side: 江州住 (Goshu-ju)— Indicates the artisan's residence in the historic province of Goshu(formerly Omi province, around Lake Biwa), a major center for metallurgyand ironworking.
Left side: 包信 (Kanenobu)— Signature of the master artisan (*Tsubashi*).
Decoration and Aesthetics:
Theme: Mountain landscape (*Sansui*)carved in relief with cloud and rock motifs.
Inlays: Features beautiful remnants of artisanal metal inlays in a light-colored alloy (*Tenzogan*) that accentuate the mountain relief.
Shape (*Gata*): *Tate Ito Gata* (Stylizedcross-shaped lobed form; very elegant).
Patina: Magnificent, natural,dark original patina (*Sabi*); very sound and well-preserved.
