Artist: Auguste Vimar (1851-1916)
The Borély racecourse is situated by the sea and overlooked by the castle of the same name. It was inaugurated on November 4th 1860, initiated by the recently created « Marseilles Racing Society ». The races ran right-handed, clockwise, and there was only flat racing. Trotting races were introduced in 1963 with the construction of a sand track, interior to the grass flat race track. For a very long time, this racecourse was also the training grounds for a number of thoroughbreds and trotters stabled in the very nearby neighbourhood of Bonneveine.
