A dugout canoe prow in the shape of a crocodile's head, collected in the Iatmul region in Papua New Guinea. The dugout canoe remains the most common means of transport in the Sepik River valley. Most of these canoes, used in the lower and middle Sepik regions, have a carved prow depicting a crocodile, an animal both feared and revered. The wood shows signs of use.
