These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the interior surfaces of roofs as well as the gables of ceremonial houses and represent, in abstract or figurative form, the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Assembled together, they cover the ceilings or gables of these large, prestigious houses. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York features in its permanent collection a complete reconstruction of a house roof decorated with painted bark of this type...
