Dating from the second half of the 18th century, this drawing, enhanced with watercolor, depicts the Arch of Constantine in Rome as seen from an arched doorway. In the foreground, a shepherd watches over animals; in the background, in front of the monument's facade, are several figures. Many artists were inspired by Hubert Robert's work during their travels in Italy. Hubert Robert was born on May 22, 1733, in Paris, where he died on April 15, 1808. A student of Panini, he returned to France with a reputation as an excellent draftsman and painter of ruined architecture. This drawing is preserved in a late 18th-century giltwood frame.
