Louis-alexandre Cabié (1853–1939)

A student of Henri Harpignies and Hippolyte Pradelles, Louis-Alexandre Cabié settled in Bordeaux around 1873 and worked in the region. He made numerous trips to Saintonge, where he painted the countryside and the banks of the Charente River near Cognac, as well as the banks of the Gironde estuary, views of Royan, and the rocks of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne. During his time in Bordeaux, he traveled to the Périgord region. Beginning in 1892, nearly a third of his works were created along the banks of the Vézère River, always near the historic site of Les Eyzies. He also worked for the Vieillard factory in Bordeaux, painting landscapes on vases. Three of these are housed at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Bordeaux. In 1887, he submitted works to the Salon des Artistes Français, where he exhibited throughout his career, winning medals. In 1908, he was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor, with his mentor and friend Harpignies serving as his sponsor. He died in poverty in Bordeaux in 1939 and was buried at the Chartreuse Cemetery in a family vault shared by more than 150 artists. A street in Bordeaux bears his name
