Introduced to drawing and painting at a very young age by her aunt, the miniaturist Mathilde Herbelin, and by the painter Charles Chaplin, Madeleine Lemaire exhibited at the Salon from the age of 19. A renowned painter, watercolourist and pastelist, she is particularly distinguished for her bouquets of flowers, which earned her the appointment of professor of botanical drawing at the Museum of Natural History in 1899.
