"Large Iron-covered Chest, Rajasthan; Trunk On Four Wooden Wheels, India. 19th Century"
Large Indian chest made of exotic wood, adorned with wrought ironwork. The domed top opens two-thirds of the way up with two wrought iron hinges, revealing a large storage space traditionally used for linens, and a transverse compartment in the upper left section. The front is entirely covered with stamped sheet metal decorated with a grid pattern and rosettes. The two sides, the back, and the lid are covered with rounded iron bands. The chest rests on four wooden casters and is also equipped with two wrought iron side handles. It is secured with a hasp and a chiseled iron buckle. This superb chest dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century and comes from the Rajasthan region in Northwest India. This type of chest was often given by the family as a dowry for a wedding. Handcrafted, this chest has some imperfections in its proportions, particularly at the back, which is slightly inclined (see (last photo). Waxed finish, note some signs of wear due to use and age.
