Gilt bronze Christ, Italy, 17th century
This model of Christ is usually attributed to the Florentine School of the 17th century. Christ is depicted alive, his gaze turned towards heaven, with a contorted body and raised arms. The feet, positioned separately and slightly offset, create a pronounced bend in the knees and a forward projection of the torso. The overall effect is a strong sense of movement in relief that accentuates the depiction of Christ's suffering and emphasizes his human nature. The short perizonium, resting more on the thighs than around the waist, is tied at the left hip with a long flap.
Christ is mounted on a 19th-century wooden cross. Resting on a stepped base, it also bears a large titulus from the same period as Christ, adorned with three winged putto heads.
Very good condition, gilding worn on the reliefs. A small piece of wood is missing from the front left corner of the pedestal.
