Miser's Snuffbox With A Twisted Grip, Blond Horn, 19th-century Folk Art
A charming snuffbox made of hot-formed blonde horn, consisting of two long hexagonal shells joined by rivets, with a small lid of same shape. Mouth for snuff, in two circles, allows for a two-finger grip, preventing impolite people from taking more snuff than necessary. This snuffbox is very airtight, with wooden stoppers on lid.
Remember: Very good snuff, finely ground, was extremely expensive, burdened by taxes and social privileges, particularly for war widows or disabled veterans receiving half-pay.
Offering someone a snuff of your box was greatly appreciated.
In good condition, slightly used.
Dimensions: 9.5cm x 5cm x 3.5cm.
