This intense and beautiful portrait is immediately striking for the energy of its colors, which immediately recall the native land of the girl portrayed, the young Spanish-born model Chiquita. One literally loses oneself in her brown eyes and the shock of raven hair that falls to her shoulders. Her flamboyant dress is reminiscent of that of gypsy women.
Alfred Rigny was born in 1888 in New York to French parents. In 1913, he moved to Paris to pursue his art studies at the École des Beaux-Arts. Volunteer service during World War I allowed him to divide his time between Montparnasse and Provence (Saint-Saturnin-d'Apt, Eygalières), two places essential to his inspiration. During World War II, his army was interned in several American cities. He returned to Paris in 1955. Part of his studio was dispersed in 1995 to Fontainebleau.
Rigny stands out for his figures, still lifes, interiors, and Provençal landscapes, characterized by a vigorous modernism and a decisive touch inherited from his academic training. His work combines the seriousness of his drawing with great pictorial freedom, often fueled by the energy of Montparnasse and the Mediterranean light. His compositions exude decorative intensity while maintaining an intimate and sensitive character.
He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1933 onwards and was given a posthumous retrospective in 1956, also at the same salon. Many of his works have been sold at public auctions in France and abroad, a testament to the continuing interest in his work.
The painting is in excellent condition. It has a white lacquered wooden frame.
