Huntley & Palmers Lithographed Tin Biscuit Tin From 1906
Artist: Huntley & Palmers
This lithographed tin box, which appeared in the 1906 Christmas catalog of the English biscuit company Huntley & Palmers under the name "Marquetery," is one of the magnificent designs created each Christmas by this Reading-based firm—a brilliant marketing idea ahead of its time that began in the late 19th century. These superb trompe-l'oeil tins allowed the biscuits to be enjoyed worldwide thanks to the parallel establishment of a mail-order sales system.
