Crouching Venus With A Tortoise, Beautiful 19th Century Bronze

Venus with a Tortoise, 19th Century Bronze
19th Century Neoclassical Bronze, Crouching Venus with a Tortoise.
Large neoclassical bronze depicting the crouching Venus, directly inspired by classical Greco-Roman antiquity.
Our Venus is entirely faithful to the classic crouching Venus, but ours is represented here with the tortoise at her feet; it is a slightly less common model.
The chasing details are superb and of great finesse. The original bronze patina is in perfect condition.

Our Venus rests on a stepped base of Siena yellow marble decorated with bronze egg-and-dart motifs.
There are a few minor chips on one of the marble corners, but they are insignificant.

A very beautiful bronze from the second half of the 19th century.

Dimensions:
25 cm x 15 cm at the base and 36 cm high.

The Crouching Venus is a Hellenistic model of Venus surprised in her bath. She is crouching, her right knee near the ground, her head turned to the right, and in most versions, she extends her right arm towards her left shoulder to cover her breasts. Judging by the number of examples unearthed at Roman sites in Italy and France, this variant of Venus seems to have been popular.[1][2] The Venus of Lely belonged to the painter Sir Peter Lely (Royal Collection, on loan to the British Museum). Several examples of Crouching Venuses in important collections have influenced modern sculptors such as Giambologna[3] and have been drawn by artists such as Martin Heemskerck, who made a drawing of the Farnese Crouching Venus, now in Naples.[4][5]
