Solid Silver Tastevin, Silversmith Jean Reyt The Elder, Auvergne, Aurillac, 18th Century
Rare Auvergne tastevin in solid silver, the basin adorned with a garland of vine leaves above a row of small narrow gadroons, late 18th century. Handle shaped like a serpent with a carved and flattened head. Maker's mark of the master goldsmith Jean Reyt the Elder. Riom assay and discharge mark 1775-1781 (used in Aurillac until 1782). Jurande mark of Aurillac (crowned P). Tastevin modified after 1796, with the insertion in the bottom of the basin of a colonial coin (Mexico) of 8 reales bearing the effigy of Charles IV, King of Spain (issue date 1796).
Good overall condition, showing signs of use. No owner's name engraved (or probably erased).
