Frédéric Montenard (1849-1926) "landscape Of Provence In Spring", Oil On Canvas,
A beautiful oil on canvas depicting a Provençal landscape in springtime; it is signed Frédéric Montenard in the lower left corner. A stunning panorama unfolds, featuring a woman in the foreground with arms laden with flowers, a cypress tree, olive trees with their white blossoms, a dry-stone hut, the azure Mediterranean Sea, and a mountain range in the distance. All of this is rendered with great detail and a warm color palette that lends the work a soft, luminous atmosphere. This painting evokes the area around Toulon. Frédéric Montenard was born in Paris in 1849; he studied under Dubufe and Puvis de Chavannes. He participated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and finished with the rank of lieutenant. He exhibited at the Salon of 1872 with austere landscapes of the Paris region. Coming from an old Provençal family, he returned to his ancestral home in Besse-sur-Issole in the Var department. He then began painting harbors, coastal seascapes, and peasant scenes, always with powerful plays of light. He was one of the founders of the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he exhibited continuously and received numerous decorative commissions, notably for the Paris City Hall and the buffet at the Gare de Lyon. He received many distinctions, such as the Gold Medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. He died in 1926 in Besse-sur-Issole. His works are exhibited in numerous museums, including those in Marseille, Toulon, Niort, and La Rochelle. Tourcoing. Oil on canvas in good condition, presented in an antique giltwood frame.
