Portrait Of Jacques Clemenceau And His Wife, Gentleman Of The Household Of The Prince Of Condé
A very rare pair of an 18th-century miniature on bone and its accompanying 19th-century painting.
The pair depicts Jacques Clemenceau (1682-1748), squire, lord of Chaffauds, gentleman of the household of the Prince of Condé, and his wife, Marie Charretier (Marie Marguerite). The work is dated 1709.
This miniature is very slightly risqué; the lady's breasts are exposed, the gentleman stands behind her, and an open, empty jewelry box is in front of her. It would seem that there is a hidden message in this miniature.
It is perfectly displayed in a gilt oak frame between two panes of glass.
In the 19th century, a large oil painting on canvas was created, reproducing the miniature but in a more chaste form. Indeed, the lady's chest is covered, and the jewelry box contains a pearl necklace.
The painting is in good condition, with a few very light scratches at the bottom.
The frame is made of wood and gilt stucco, of good size.
Portraits of a couple are rare.
There is no artist's signature; it was most likely commissioned by the family
. This unusual set of a miniature and its accompanying painting is very decorative; indeed, it is interesting to hang the painting and place the miniature on a piece of furniture in front of it.
