Louis XIV At Hôtel De Ville On Occasion Of His Recovery, 1687, Engraving By Sebastien Leclerc.
Artist: Sebastien Leclerc
A beautiful engraving, mounted 19th century on a card covered with laid paper, an old mount with a well-executed recessed effect.
This engraving, in Latin, is held in museums and at the Metz Media Library, FIE LEC 9428, whose description I reproduce below:
"Leclerc, Sébastien (1637-1714). Engraver. Reception of Louis XIV at the City Hall on the occasion of his recovery, January 30, 1687.
Six round medallions surround an oval medallion bearing the arms of Paris. The top central medallion contains a bust of the king as emperor in profile facing right. The top left medallion depicts the king leaving Notre-Dame where he has given thanks to God; the top right medallion shows a view of the City Hall with the arrival of the procession; the bottom left medallion shows the king's reception by the city officials; and the bottom right medallion shows the feast served in the great hall. The last medallion, at the bottom center, contains only an inscription. Below the medallions is a view of Paris taken from the Pont Royal looking east. All around, a wide decorative border, on which, at the bottom, is a white space bearing the names of city officials in three lines."
Overall dimensions: 41cm x 29.5cm. Good condition, minimal wear.
