Glass-top Table Made From An Antique Sicilian Cart Ironwork – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Coffee table created from an original wrought-iron element of a Sicilian cart, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
The base, forged entirely by hand, most likely originates from eastern Sicily (Catania – Acireale – Etna area), renowned for its highly ornate carts, richer and more elaborate than those of the Palermo school.
The work, attributable to master Sicilian blacksmiths and cart-makers active between 1880 and 1920, features an exceptionally intricate repertoire of phytomorphic and zoomorphic motifs, with interlacing scrolls, animals, anthropomorphic figures and ornamental patterns typical of Sicilian folk art.
At the centre stands a crossed emblem, possibly linked to religious symbolism or the original commissioning family.
The two expressive figurative masks on the sides testify to expert craftsmanship, while the lower bar with dancing figures—a rare and highly sought-after theme—makes the piece even more remarkable.
The iron maintains its completely original patina, untouched and never sandblasted, a highly desirable feature for collectors of authentic Sicilian artefacts.
The glass top, added in recent times, allows the piece to function as a coffee table while preserving full visibility of the extraordinary ironwork beneath.
A unique decorative item, full of character and strong scenic impact—perfect for Mediterranean interiors, rustic-chic spaces, industrial lofts or as a statement piece in contemporary design projects.
