A fine early 20th-century Vatican micromosaic depicting the Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso, by Lorenzo Cassio, one of the most accomplished artists of the Studio del Mosaico, Basilica of St Peter’s, Vatican.

Composed of beautifully cut tesserae in rich tones of blue, red, gold and flesh tones, the mosaic exemplifies Cassio’s distinctive handling of colour and his characteristic Byzantine-influenced devotional subjects.
