"Espoliné Indian Kashmir Shawl With Fuchsia Reserve - France Circa 1860"
Circa 1860, India, for export to France. A precious long cashmere shawl from India, woven in a seven-color tapestry stitch, dating from the late Second Empire. The very fine weave features a superimposed design of long palm fronds/boteh that intertwine within a highly detailed vegetal motif. The Indian artisan's signature is embroidered in the central almond-shaped fuchsia reserve. Harlequin-embroidered borders adorn both ends. These rich shawls were part of wedding gift baskets. They adorned crinoline dresses and decorated Second Empire interiors. Unfortunately, there are several dozen tiny moth holes, the largest of which have been restored and consolidated (see the last two photos). The tapestry stitch weave, however, makes this shawl very durable. It can be handled and used without any problems. No stains. Beautiful, fresh colors and stable condition. Dimensions: 138 cm x 313 cm
