Antique Italian Work Desk With Pull-out Writing Surface – 19th Century
Antique Italian work desk from the second half of the 19th century, made of solid wood and featuring elegant turned legs, five drawers, and a rare original pull-out writing surface.
Originating from northern Italy — likely Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, or Veneto — this type of desk was commonly used in notary offices, municipal administrations, school workshops, and artisan studios, where sturdiness and practicality were essential.
The pull-out surface, now uncommon to find in original condition, served as an auxiliary writing board or work surface for documents and tools. The large top preserves a beautiful, authentic aged patina, with traces of ink and natural wear that testify to the desk’s long professional use.
Functional rather than decorative in character, this desk represents a classic example of 19th-century Italian office furniture. Solid, authentic and still fully usable, it is ideal for home offices, libraries, studios, and classic or country-chic interiors.
