Large Hand-carved Volterra Alabaster Centerpiece With Shell And Dolphin Motifs – Italy, 20th
Large hand-carved alabaster centerpiece, produced according to the long-standing artistic tradition of Volterra, Tuscany, internationally renowned for its fine alabaster craftsmanship.
The generously proportioned bowl features an elegant scalloped shell-shaped rim enriched with finely carved zoomorphic handles inspired by dolphins, while the pedestal is decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, creating a refined composition strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance decorative repertoire.
The naturally veined alabaster, displaying warm ivory, honey and grey tones, gives the piece remarkable depth and luminosity. Every example is unique thanks to the natural character of the stone.
The centerpiece is composed of two separate elements (bowl and pedestal), a construction commonly found in high-quality twentieth-century Volterra productions.
Its impressive dimensions and elegant sculptural quality make it an outstanding decorative object, ideal as a centerpiece for an important dining table, console or sideboard, perfectly suited to both classical and contemporary interiors.
Although unsigned, the workmanship, style and choice of material strongly suggest a production from Volterra (Tuscany), dating to the mid-20th century (circa 1930–1955).
An elegant and highly decorative example of traditional Italian alabaster craftsmanship.
