Authentic 19th-century Pardon Ball
In Brittany, it wasn't proper for a young suitor to approach a young woman… Returning home after the annual market, he had some time before the next pardon (religious festival) to think of her. He had a mercury glass sphere made, its diameter reflecting his wealth. The big day arrived, and at the end of the Pardon, he offered his gift to his beloved. If she accepted it, even without a word, before God and the entire community, the banns were published, and no one could oppose their union. This custom allowed marriages to be chosen, not imposed by ancestors. The hardest part of the story is photographing this 16 cm diameter sphere properly without too many reflections…
