Stamped F. Lieutaud - Regency-style Commode Tombeau - Around 1720

Artist: François Lieutaud
EXCEPTIONAL LOUIS XV REGENCY TOMB-SHAPED COMMODE.

With a curved front and sides, veneered in kingwood with a rosewood frame, it features four drawers in three rows separated by brass fluting.
The drawer bottoms and sides are walnut, the fronts softwood.
Magnificent 18th-century gilt bronze mounts adorn the handles, keyhole escutcheons, finial, and drops.
The top is of pink, gray, and white veined marble.
A very fine piece commissioned by a high-ranking figure.

Stamped with the monogram FL for François LIEUTAUD.
Early 18th century. An old and very well-executed restoration to the marble.
W.130   D.63   H.89.

This piece has been inspected and maintained by our cabinetmaker Serge CHAILLOU, Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman of France) and accredited by the National Museums.

The mark "FL" corresponds to the stamp of François Lieutaud (1665-1748), who became a Master craftsman at the end of the 17th century.
He and Charles Boulle created some of the finest furniture at Versailles.

Records from a contemporary lawsuit indicate that, exceptionally, King Louis XIV granted him the rare privilege of creating and crafting the bronze mounts for his furniture, as at that time only the bronze-makers' guild held this exclusive right. In the history of furniture, the use of walnut for the construction of the drawers, as is the case with our commode, testifies both to a distinctly Parisian style and to meticulous craftsmanship: it is a commissioned piece.
Later, with the walnut shortage following the harsh winter of 1709, walnut was replaced by oak. François Lieutaud is among the greatest cabinetmakers of his time.
To date, very few of his works are available on the market, making our chest of drawers, described below, a rare piece of furniture.
