Second Half Of The 19th Century Bible With Illustrations By Gustav Doré
Elegant and precious Bible, in two volumes of the Old and New Testaments, in German. The volumes feature red morocco leather covers, enriched with gilded text and geometric motif engravings. The outside of the pages is also embellished with gilding. Inside are prefaces from the Bishop's Office of Augsburg, dated 1867, while the biblical text is enriched with 230 illustrations and decorations (per book) by the famous engraver Gustav Doré, lending further refinement. The illustrations, also present in the text in Gothic font, are classically evocative and make these two volumes highly prized collector's items and highly displayable. German manufacture, second half of the 19th century.
