Second Half Of The 19th Centurylarge Parade Plate With The Triumph Of Galatea
Elegant and unique large polychrome majolica display plate. This sizable plate features refined interior decorations, featuring the classic depiction of the so-called "Triumph of Galatea" in the center. The nymph Galatea is depicted in apotheosis, riding a shell chariot at sea, half-naked, surrounded by nereids, tritons, and cupids, including a flying cupid about to shoot an arrow. Around the rim of the plate are motifs of intertwined plants and fantastical faces, also reminiscent of classical art. This is a tasteful and refined plate, appreciated for its chromatic rendering and realistic detail, capable of lending a touch of class and antiquity to any setting. Neapolitan manufacture, likely from the workshop of Gaetano Battaglia (1850-1880), from the second half of the 19th century.
