Depicting one of the Ballerinas Combing Their Hair, painted in 1953.
Marguerite Antoine, 1907-1988, was a painter born in Bomal. She studied under Alfred Bastien at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where she associated with many future leading figures of Belgian painting, including Jules Lismonde, who remained a lifelong friend and with whom she collaborated. She was the wife of Fernand Cannoot, who in 1941 was one of the founders of the resistance group known as Athos, attached to the Zero service. Her paintings convey luminous landscapes and magical views of dreamlike cities, but she excels above all in scenes with figures drawn from the wonderful world of the circus, cabaret, and ballerinas. She left her mark on the Belgian painting scene with a light touch. She died on December 10, 1988, in Mariakerke (Ostend), having expressed a wish before leaving this world: to see the North Sea again. The artist is listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron dictionaries. Her work is also listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
