A beautiful pair of candelabra attributed to Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764-1824) in gilt and patinated bronze, commonly known as "the noble savages," the design of which is held in the Prints Department of the National Library of France in Paris.
The young African hunters, adorned with gilt bronze beaded necklaces, each support two candle arms and are dressed in fringed loincloths.
Characteristic of the bronze sculptor Jean-Simon Deverberie, the figures' eyes are made of sulphide. They rest on a base imitating the shaft of a banded Doric column, supported by lion's paw feet.

Superb condition, original gilding and patina.

Directoire-Consulate-Empire period, 1795-1800.

For identical models:
- Christie's, London, December 13, 2001, lot 560 (£23,500)
- Christie's, Amsterdam, September 27, 2001, lot 700 (€23,500).

Two identical pairs are held at the Musée François Duesberg (E. Niehuser, French Bronze Clocks, 1700-1830, Atglen, 1999, fig. 262).

Having started as a founder in 1788, Jean-Simon Deverberie became a bronze caster specializing in clockmaking after the abolition of guilds by the Allarde Law in 1791 and opened his clock factory with Jean Georges Hertzog on rue Barbette in Paris in 1800. Deverberie was then active on Boulevard du Temple in 1804 and on Rue des Fossés du Temple in 1812-1820. He is known as the bronze sculptor of "noble savage" models, combining brown and gold patina. He created the famous "African" clocks and candelabras depicting idealized Africans, and also their "American" counterparts featuring idealized Native Americans distinguished by their feather headdresses.
